A biography usually features an individual who was a prominent participant of significant events, or who made distinctive statements or comments that were recorded. Barbara Heck left neither letters and declarations. In fact, the sole evidence regarding the date of Barbara Heck's marriage comes from secondary sources. There are no surviving primary sources from which one can reconstruct her motives and her behavior throughout her life. However, she is a iconic figure within the first period of Methodism in North America. It is a case where the purpose of the biography is to debunk the myths or legends and if it is able to be done, describe the person that was enshrined.

The Methodist historian Abel Stevens wrote in 1866. Barbara Heck has taken the top spot in the New World's ecclesiastical list due to the rise of Methodism. It is due to the fact that the story of Barbara Heck must be primarily based on her contribution to the greater cause to which her life's work remains forever connected. Barbara Heck was involved fortuitously with the beginning of Methodism throughout the United States and Canada and her fame is based on the inherent tendency of a highly successful movement or institution to celebrate its origins for the purpose of enhancing its sense of tradition and continuity with its past.
